Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Ogun State, Prof. Olusola Oyewole has advised newly-admitted students of the university to be disciplined, focused and determined so that they could graduate on record time and with flying colours. He gave the advice during their orientation programme recently. Prof Oyewole who is also the President, Association of African Universities (AAU) said there were many distractions associated with life in the university, but admonished the students not to get carried away with their new experience but to remain disciplined, have a vision to succeed and be determined to be the best. According to him, the orientation programme meant to introduce them to university life, while inculcating in them the secrets to success, norms, dos and don’ts, which would make them blend well in the institution. Also speaking at the programme, the Registrar, Mr. Mathew Ayoola charged the new students to always conduct themselves in a manner that would project the image of the university positively, stressing that the university has zero tolerance for unruly behaviour such as reckless driving on campus, disturbance of peace, fighting, use of threat or violence of any kind, willful damage or destruction of property and forgery. Others according to him are stealing of university produce, use of hard drugs, betting, gambling, sexual assault and abuse, membership of anti-social and illegal associations such as cultism, insubordination to university official, bringing dangerous weapons to examination hall, wearing of indecent dresses on campus, among other vices. Speaking on the topic, “Importance of University Education and Expectations of University Students,” the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Catherine Eromosele disclosed that universities were expected to produce high-level manpower for the various sectors of the economy, noting that students are the raw materials to be processed by the university into useful products for societal development. She added that university education is a serious business and certainly has no place for the weak-minded persons therefore the expectations of university students should be the acquisition of knowledge and practical skills in their areas of study, capacity building, capacity for sound judgement and a discerning mind to make choices at cross-roads of life.
