Upper Room Baptist Church held its Excellence Award ceremony for Public Secondary School in Kosofe Zone, Education District II of Lagos at its headquarters recently.
The award which was its second edition of the Excellence Award which was established in 2012 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the church is aimed at rewarding excellence and improving the education sector of the state.
General Overseer of the church, Pastor Oluleke Akinola pointed that the church’s purpose for instituting the award is to acknowledge, recognise and reward annually good performance in public secondary schools in Kosofe zone on the basis of West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination. “It is a corporate social responsibility programme which we believe will encourage hard work among students, teachers and principal irrespective of religion or tribe.
“There is no gainsaying that government alone cannot bring the changes we desire in the country rather it will be through the efforts of corporate organizations and individuals, as they need our support to achieve a better society,” he stated. Also speaking at the event the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary Lagos State Education District II Barrister (Mrs.) Solarin Margaret Titilayo noted that the state government always appreciates partnership in the field of education especially from religious organisation.
Mrs. Tititlayo who represented the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the event pointed that the state government is working assiduously to tackle all the problems confronting the state especially security of lives and properties.
Ambode appealed to the general public to ensure they pay their taxes, because the bulk of funds used by government to execute projects that will be of benefit to the populace come from it.
The recipients of the awards are the three best overall students in WAEC includes Adebo Amos Ehije of Ikosi Senior High School, Ketu, Igwe Timothy Ugochukwu, Mende senior High School, Mende Maryland and Alebiosu Simbiat, Ikosi Senior High school, who came first, second and third respectively. In the schools category, Comprehensive Senior High, Alapere-Ketu emerged the best school with 88 per cent pass rate, Mende Senior High School came second with 85 per cent while Ayedere Ajibola Senior High School came third with 80 per cent
